Alyssa stresses that many children feel dysregulated during the back-to-school transition and may experience a spike in separation anxiety. Because of this, she has a few tips for how parents can deal with their tiny human’s big emotions:

Preview and prepare: Request pictures of your child’s school and teacher to help your child prepare, or do a walk-through of the school at a time when your child is feeling regulated.

Create coping strategies: Put a family picture or favorite stuffed animal in your child’s backpack. This will help your child self-soothe while at school.

Create routines: Develop a healthy drop-off and pick-up routine that regulates your child’s nervous system and commit to no nightly activities for at least two weeks after school begins.

These are just a few ways Alyssa suggests regulating your child’s big, back-to-school emotions.Alyssa Blask Campbell is the founder and CEO of Seed & Sew, an organization committed to giving parents, teachers and caregivers the tools to raise emotionally intelligent humans.
