Charlie Korin Pokorny began practicing at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1991 and trained as a resident at Tassajara and Green Gulch Farm from 1994 to 2006. He received his master’s degree in religious studies at Stanford University in 1994 and was ordained as a priest by Reb Anderson in 1999. From 2008 to 2018, Charlie studied koans with Daniel Terragno and in 2014, Charlie and his partner, Sarah Dojin Emerson, began serving as head priests at Stone Creek Zen Center, founded by Jisho Warner. Charlie received transmission in 2018. He also teaches at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, including courses on Buddhist philosophy, history, meditation, and ritual practice.

Ian White Maher

Reverend Teijo Munnich the is founder and Dharma Teacher for the Great Tree Zen Women’s Temple, the Zen Center of Asheville and she is the Dharma Teacher for the Charlotte Zen Meditation Society. Teijo studied with Dainin Katagiri Roshi from 1975 until his death in 1990. Teijo was ordained as a Zen priest in 1981and received transmission in 1989. In addition to training at Hokyoji (Catching the Moon Zen Mountain Center) in Minnesota, Teijo also received formal training at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in CA and Hosshinji in Obama, Japan.

Rev. Teijo Munnich

Rev. Liên Shutt was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam and began her meditation practice in the Insight tradition. In 1998, she helped create Buddhists of Color, one of the early meditation groups committed to supporting practitioners of color San Francisco Bay area. Liên began her formal monastic training in 2002 at Tassajara Zen Monastery and continued her monastic training in Japan and Vietnam. While she has placed her trust and faith in Soto Zen, Liên continues to enjoy the deep silence of Insight practices and has completed retreats in the U.S. and Thailand. She received dharma transmission from Zenkei Blanche Hartman in 2013.

Koen Vermeulen, JDPSN, began practicing with the Kwan Um School of Zen in 1992, frequently from Brussels to Paris for the monthly retreats.  He participated in a seven-week retreat in 1995 and a three-month Kyol Che in 1998. In 2013, Koen Vermeulen received Inka from Zen Master Wu Bong in Wu Bong Sah Temple in Poland. Currently, he is the Secretary-General of the Belgian Buddhist Union, which works to develop the recognition of Buddhism in Belgium, provide training programs in Buddhist philosophy and ethics, Buddhist counseling in the health sector, and with prison work.

Koen Vermeulen, JDPSN

Sosan Theresa Flynn is the current president of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association of North America. She is also the Guiding Teacher at Clouds in Water Zen Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sosan has studied and practiced Soto Zen Buddhism for the past 29 years, receiving dharma transmission (full teaching authority) in 2012 from Joen Snyder O'Neal. While she teaches on many aspects of Zen Buddhism, her special interest is the intersection of Buddhist practice and racial justice. Sosan has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas and offers premarital and couples counseling from a Zen Buddhist perspective. Raised Catholic, she recently served on the Multi-Religious Fellows Advisory Board of the Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research.
