This mixtape is a collection of vaporwave edits I’ve made over the last 6 months. During the pandemic, I discovered Vaporwave while working from home. As an '80s kid, I was instantly hooked by the often repetitive, 'chopped-and-screwed' flips of obscure ‘80s and ‘90s songs, which left me nostalgic for that time while simultaneously reminding me of the DJ Screw tapes I used to collect back in college, especially when he would slip in random rock or '80s R&B songs. I also dug the weird Windows clipart aesthetic that shows up in so much of the artwork. This tape might be a departure from my usual, but I only make bangers.

The formula isn't rocket science and goes something like this: start with a clean audio file, slow it down until it sounds 'right', then experiment with different analog emulation plugins until it could pass for something from a Screw tape. I recreated the mixtape I used to make for friends from Sinéad’s first two CDs, back when I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got blew up in 10th grade. RIP.

I firmly believe that both mainstream Rock and Roll and Hip Hop died in the year 2000. That said, I’ve always had a genuine soft spot for the early days of Skratch 'N Sniff’s mashups, before they started putting dubstep drops on everything and I lost interest after 2010. They used to post their edits as full tracks on a now-defunct site, and sometime around 2008, I grabbed as many as I could and tucked them away for safekeeping. It’s time to give Skratch 'N Sniff, Malcolm Ryker and DJ Mike Czech, their flowers.

With hardly any free time anymore, I’ve started cooking up vaporwave edits on the weekends to make the most of the few hours I get to myself.

During the pandemic, I discovered Vaporwave while working from home and was instantly hooked by the often repetitive, chopped-and-screwed edits of obscure ‘80s and ‘90s tracks, which reminded me of the DJ Screw tapes I used to bump back in college—especially the random ‘80s rock or R&B songs that he would slip onto those tapes. I also dug the seemingly random Windows clipart aesthetic in much of the artwork. This tape might be a departure from my usual, but I only post bangers.

These are all edits that I’ve done over the last year. The formula goes something like this: start with a pristine audio file, slow it down until it sounds "right", then experiment with different analog emulation plugins until you end up with something that could fit on a screw tape (“It’s goin’ down!”). Lastly, give the artwork a similar treatment, and you’re all set.

For me, the aughts consisted of lots and lots of virtual crate-digging. I found so much great stuff back then that I ultimately bought a controller and resumed DJing after something like a 15-year break. For this mix, I combed through joints I collected mostly during what is now called the blog era. These are gems that have survived countless hard drive purges over the years and currently live in a folder named "Indie Rap" because I can't think of a better genre name.
