Episode 120 - Invasions - Balor of the Evil Eye

Welcome back to the Invasions Series.

This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. We are not quite sure where the Formorians came from, other than Tory Island and the land under the sea, as their name suggests; the people from under sea - Fomóire, Modern Irish: Fomhóraigh or Fomhóire.

Although the Formorians have appeared in the stories of the Mythic Cycle before, we have no clear way of knowing where exactly they came from. We have a few opinions about who they might be descended from, but nothing definitive.

Wherever they came from, they lived in and around Tory Island and they were fierce raiders and warriors. They did not sow. They did not farm, they seemed to survive only from taking what was not theirs. But does this make them evil? Balor was one of the 7 great Kings of the Formorian People and although he was known for his evil eye, he was not all evil.
