Placing the ads on your site strategically is important, but there are other factors to consider, too.

Okay, here’s the deal. I do agree that ad placement is critical. In fact, I have run tests myself to figure out that part. Over the years, I have tried banner ads in the sidebars and  affiliate banner ads here and there, and to be honest, I never had the best of luck. I tested. I tried different implementations. But they just weren’t right for my audience.

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective. You just need to test it yourself and find what will work with your audience within the confines of the layout of your site.

You also need to make sure you are advertising the right stuff. I remember years ago landing on a WordPress tutorial site that had Google ads showing specials on cruises. Well, that was a bit of a reach I would say.

Then There is the Element of When

This is just an important as the where. Or very, very close.

If you start placing ads, or even affiliates, there will be times when you want it to show only for a specific time frame, for instance, the upcoming Black Friday specials.  You want it to disappear the moment your promotion is over. There is nothing worse than getting your readers excited about a discount or bargain that no longer exists.

The Magic of Placement, Time Span and Conditional Logic

Imagine you have a site for WordPress design. You also have a blog. In your blog, you have several posts about a Genesis child theme that you used to design the site with. Then you find that StudioPress, the makers of Genesis, is having a deal. But it’s limited for a day or two.

What if you could control an ad by simply telling it that if it belongs to a category called Genesis child themes, it  needs to show in a specific spot for only 24 hours? Would that be the right solution?

You bet.

So if you want to place ads or affiliates in posts, and truly have control over them, make sure the plugin you use for your WordPress site meets your needs.
