The most critical challenge of leadership is emotional courage. In business, it takes strong leaders to forge the path to innovative ideas, thoughts, and methods. So it’s essential to be confident in yourself, connected to others, and committed to a purpose. Peter Bregman from Bregman Partners joins us to talk about the crucial practice of emotional courage that being such a leader necessitates.

I had a fantastic conversation with Peter, centering around the ideas in his new book, Leading With Emotional Courage: How to Have Hard Conversations, Create Accountability, and Inspire Action on Your Most Important Work.

Are you willing to experience the discomfort, the risk, or the uncertainty of saying or doing something that needs to be communicated?

In order to lead and find success, we have to have these three things under our belt:

confidence in self – this not an arrogance but an assuredness in yourself

connection to others – this is both a trust in people and people trusting in you, which builds loyalty, accountability, and togetherness

commitment to purpose – an understanding of what are you doing in the world

And what do you need in order to practice those three things?

Emotional courage.

Peter explains that this is the key to leadership: your willingness (and courage) to feel everything that might come up in the process. As entrepreneurs, we are often in the hot seat with negative feedback, naysayers, tough clients, or difficult employees. It takes a mature and courageous leader to be centered, connected, and committed enough to work through those situations.

In this episode, we talk about

a very practical way to build emotional courage in yourself

closing the gap between what we know and what we do

accountability to yourself and having others be accountable to you

Leading With Emotional Courage is available for pre-order now and launches on Saturday, July 7th! You can pre-order it now, and you can view a teaser snippet here!
