les voeux - French expression

What does the French expression ' voeux ' - or ' voeux ' mean? How is it used in a sentence? Listen to Anne Audio.

les vœux - the wishes. The expression often refers to New Year's greetings. French people prefer to send New Year’s greeting cards in January rather than season’s greetings cards at the end of the year. The card generally only says “Bonne année et bonne santé” - Happy New Year and good health - there is no letter with it. It has a signature at the bottom. Just that.

* « Je [ne] peux pas venir cet aprème car j'écris mes vœux. »

* "I cant' come this afternoon because I'm writing my New Year's cards."
