Meditation: Ancestral Shoulders (Looking Back)

Breathe deep,

connecting with your surroundings,

feeling the present moment

inside and out.

PAUSE

Keep breathing and staying connected,

letting your mind clear stray thoughts

and open wide to possibility.

PAUSE

See if you can imagine

a beautiful, hand-carved totem pole

rising before you.

A totem pole of your ancestors,

loved ones who have crossed over

in your lifetime and before

except at the top.

You are at the top of the totem pole.

PAUSE

Reach out your hand,

exploring the smooth curves and valleys

of each part of the totem pole.

They feel like parts of you.

PAUSE

Starting at the bottom,

your hand glides over the nose and eyes

of an ancestor

and you hear a whisper from them:

“You stand on my shoulders.

I bring you this gift.”

Breathe into the whisper until you feel their gift.

PAUSE

You move to another ancestor on the totem pole,

and begin gently stroking their face.

As you do, you feel love from them,

and hear a whisper.

“You stand on my shoulders.

I bring you this gift.”

What is the gift from this ancestor?

Breathe it into yourself.

PAUSE

You choose one more ancestor,

one that seems to call to you

with the deepest of love.

You cup your hands around their face.

This time, you hear a different whisper.

“Yes, you stand on my shoulders,

But you were my gift.”

Take a minute and hold this offering of love close.

PAUSE

Breathe, and feel yourself returning to the present.

Take in all the love and blessings 

from your ancestors.

Hold them in your being.

PAUSE

Breathe again, and

listen to one more whisper.

“You stand on our shoulders,

And we will love you always.

Accept this beautiful whisper.

And thank the ancestors

for this blessing that you will carry

with you. Always.
