There’s a reason why the name Al Capone is still so well known today. The stout, cigar-chomping mobster has inspired countless films, pieces of literature, musicians, and, of course, criminals. While there were comparable crime figures in the 1920s, the Chicago mobster truly stood out from the pack. In terms of his impact on the underworld, Capone rose from being a street thug to the FBI’s “Public Enemy No. 1” in the span of about a decade. Al Capone was one of the most notorious gangsters of all time. During Prohibition, he lived the fast life, rolled in money, and committed crime after crime he thought he’d get away with. Prohibition had opened up vast new opportunities for Chicago criminals and Capone took full advantage of them, controlling illicit stills, organizing liquor distribution, and bribing police and politicians.
