QT-ESL Podcast No. 50 - “Why” Part 2

Hi! I’m Marianne Raynaud, and I’m here to help you improve your level of spoken English. So let’s get started.

As we learned in podcast number 49 “why” is an interrogative word used to ask a question. We did an exercise imitating young children learning to speak, who will often annoy their parents by asking questions with “why” every time the adult says something.

Do you remember some of the annoying questions asked by children that we practiced in podcast number 49? Listen and repeat.

Why must I put on my shoes?

Why are we going out?

Why will it be good for me to play outside?

Why should I get some fresh air?

Why is it better for my health?

Why won’t I become ill?

Your friends can also be annoying when you are talking about politics. Let’s work on some statements followed by questions starting with “why…?” Listen and repeat.

I wrote to my congressman.

Why did you write to your congressman?

I wanted to complain.

Why did you want to complain?

I don’t agree with his plan.

Why don’t you agree with his plan?

The economy is going under.

Why is the economy going under?

Terrible things will happen.

Why will terrible things happen?

Unemployment will increase.

Why will unemployment increase?

If you are not too frustrated, let’s listen and repeat some more sentences of the same kind.

Workers will lose their jobs.

Why will workers lose their jobs?

The employers won’t keep them.

Why won't the employers keep them?

The banks will lend them less money.

Why will the banks lend them less money?

People will default on loans.

Why will people default on loans?

They won’t be able to meet their payments.

Why won't they be able to meet their payments?

Our Congress is doing the wrong thing.

Why is our Congress doing the wrong thing?
