He wrote it six years before his death, and thirty-three years after he settled in Europe after leaving America.  It’s the story of a wealthy young man who leaves America in his youth, follows a life of dissipation for 33 years in Europe, and returns to his ancestral home in New York. He is struck by the changes he sees, of course.
