003: Steve Liang|SensorUp: The World’s 1st IOT Platform Based On Open Geospatial and ISO Standards
Today, Dr. Steve Liang, Founder of SensorUp and Professor at University of Calgary, joins us to share his experience and insights on building the world’s first compliant implementation of the OGC SensorThings API. During the show, Steve talks about their mission and vision of building an open and unified way of interconnecting IoT devices, data, and applications over the Web. He emphasises the importance of interoperability, extensibility, and flexibility when designing/ developing and IoT product, and express his concerns over implementing proprietary standards. We also talked about the opportunities he see in the IoT industry today, as well as the obstacles and difficulties he and his partners face in bringing IoT products and services to the market. To achieve the vision, Dr. Liang is the editor of the Open Geospatial Consortium SensorThings API standard specification, and SensorUp is world’s first and the most innovative implementation of the SensorThings standard.

SensorUp led the development of the Open Geospatial Consortium SensorThings API standard specification, an open and unified geospatial framework to interconnect IoT sensing devices, data, and applications over the Web. In March 2016 SensorUp submitted a new open source software project proposal, titled Whiskers, to the Eclipse Foundation. Whiskers will be an open source Javascript client library for the OGC SensorThings API and a light-weight OGC SensorThings API server for IoT gateways (e.g., Raspberry Pi).
