Family stories are supposed to have clear endings. We tell them over dinner, laugh, cry, and move on. But not all stories end that way. Some just…stop.

My uncle Gene was my favorite uncle. He was a jokester, the guy who could make you laugh even when you were mad. But he was also complicated—he drank too much, and sometimes that temper of his would come out. But he loved us. And for that reason, his story is one I’ve never forgotten.
