This morning we explore some of the reasons for the sharp rise in cremations among Jewish people, and discuss Judaism's objection to this practice, on both technical and philosophical grounds; namely, that cremation rejects one of Judaism's most essential truths, even expressed in Walt Whitman's famous poem, "Leaves of Grass."

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
