Why does Rashi insist the owner may not help a needy person who is collecting there? Isn't helping better than not helping? A magnificent story from Rabbi Meilech Biderman illuminates this question. The greatest kindness is not what makes us feel like we are generous, but what gives the recipient the most sense of self-worth and dignity.
