114: RBA card surcharge ban - will it actually work? With Prof Steve Worthington

Listen Later

This week we spoke about two pretty big developments in the personal finance space: ubank's savings account tweaks, and the RBA's wish to ban card surcharges. For the latter we spoke to Professor Steve Worthington from Swinburne University - how the surcharges came about, why they are so prevalent, where he sees the payments sector going on and more.

And for the former we spoke to resident finance journalist Denise Raward. We also discussed the rise of conditional savings accounts, and where to find a competitive unconditional rate. They are not as high as rates on products that make you jump through 11,000 hoops - but they're out there. This was all part of an ACCC deposit inquiry a couple of years ago, but as Denise said, so far that inquiry amounted to diddly squat.

We also discussed this in the news - plus a new report from Tyro on the price of eating and drinking out. And the latest savings tips.
