In 1995, the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in the United States took place in Oklahoma City. 168 people were killed, including 19 children, 219 children lost at least one parent and 30 children were orphaned. Several hundred more were injured. When the tragedy occurred, the people of Oklahoma banded together in a community-wide display of spontaneous altruism – giving until there was no more to give. This became a statewide initiative known as the Oklahoma Standard.
