He introduces Vuk Karadžić's Croatian counterpart Ljudevit Gaj and their dual attempts to define Serbs and Croats linguistically. Kemal discusses Illiryianism and its evolution into the Croatian national project, as well as the impact of 'Hungarianization' in the empire. He also brings Ante Starčević to the pod, the controversial nationalist loved even by contemporary neo-fascists in Croatia, and digs underneath his reputation. Also featured: Dubrovnik and Bosnia as nationalist mascots, a noticeably lacking 'Triune' Kingdom, and Ustaša catalyst Josip Frank and his Pure Party of Rights. It's an unusually long one for the TENE boys, but both fascinating and necessary for understanding what is to follow.
