Shani's first born daughter was born with permanent hearing loss with no known causes or trace of any virus. Her second born was born with a cancerous tumour on her chest, which spontaneously resolved itself at 6 months old.

Shani carried a lot of guilt that her daughter's cancer journey was a positive outcome compared to a close family friend who's son lost his cancer battle at the age of 2.

Shani then goes to explain hearing about an acquaintance's tragic journey during pregnancy which resulted in her unable to have further children. Within the same conversation, Shani had "slipped into her DMs" and offered to become her surrogate.
