42. Is Christianity a "White Man's Religion"? & Learning Phillis Wheatley's Story

Listen Later

Slaves were brought to America by many who claimed Christianity. Then, they were given out-of-context Bible verses to teach them how to stay in their place. Even today, many believers romanticize the old south despite knowledge of the atrocity that took place.

It's because of these things that Christianity is sometimes dismissed as just for White people. In this week's episode, we explore the idea of Christianity being a "White Man's Religion", where that came from, and how to fight against it.

We also talk about the life of Phillis Wheatley, one of the best known pre-19th century poets and an African-American slave. Her story is tragic and beautiful and nuanced, and it was a privilege to learn about her this week.
