Shoftim
Deuteronomy 16:18 — 21:9
Acting Presumptuously
Join us for our Shabbat service with teaching on the Torah Portion by Bill Cloud.
The Hebrew word for judges, shoftim (שפטים) comes from root שפט shafat – “to create order,” so the objective of true judgement is to create order and to end chaos. If there is a need for order, then the implication is that there might be disorder. First of all, let us consider the season we are in -- Elul. This is to be a time of introspection and examining (judging) our lives. If the world is teetering on the edge of judgement, then judgement is even closer to our house. Knowing this, we should take heed to create order in our lives and judge ourselves as we are admonished. Refusing to act appropriately runs the risk of acting "presumptuously."
Acting presumptuously blurs or ignores the boundaries that define appropriate behavior and shows that we are choosing to do what is right in our own eyes. Rather than that, we must discern what is right according to God's standard so that we may be judged worthy. The Day of Judgement is coming... let us get our lives (and houses) in order that we may obtain His mercy.
If you are enjoying this live stream, PLEASE consider sending in an offering, tithe, or donation to help us continue spread the gospel free from Jacob's Tent. We work hard to make sure this is an enjoyable experience to our online community, but it doesn't come without a price.
Give online via the Jacobs Tent app, our website, or text any amount to 84321 to support this ministry. Yahweh bless you and keep you! Shalom.
