Generation to Generation: There’s Room for Every Story — Hope
Matthew 1:1–17 | Advent Week 1
This Advent, we begin a journey through the stories that carried hope forward — generation to generation — all the way to Jesus, and now to us. In Matthew’s Gospel, the story of Christ doesn’t begin with angels or shepherds, but with a long list of names. Some we recognize. Most we don’t. Yet each one played a part in paving the way for God’s love to take on flesh.
In this sermon, Pastor Zach reminds us that Matthew’s genealogy is more than a historical record — it’s a proclamation that there is room in God’s family for every story: heroes and imperfect people, insiders and outsiders, the remembered and the forgotten. And if their stories mattered, so does yours.
As we light the candle of hope this week, we reflect on the ways our lives are shaped by those who came before us — and how God continues to work through our relationships, our choices, and our communities today. Because hope didn’t end in Bethlehem. Hope continues every time we share the story of God’s love at work in our lives.
