In this podcast Schlich talks with Working Class Rockstar Ivan “Funkboy” Bodley about Bodley´s youth in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the difficulties of growing up in a small town and the aspiration to find a better life. They talk about how bass lessons from Bodley´s mentor and friend, Stanley Clarke inspired him to follow the line of a professional musician and about the experience of being livelong on the road as a bass guitarist and how you can survive this life without getting depressed. We will listen to Bodley´s tunes like Pig´s Feet and Potted Meat, Bustin Hump and Crab Walk and learn some insider details of these songs.

Ivan “Funkboy” Bodley is a bass player and music director to the stars. He has performed with 50 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees. He has been music director for Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, The Shirelles, The Crystals, and has performed with Sting, Elvis Costello, Temptations, Solomon Burke, Ben E. King, Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd, Bo Diddley, Paul Rodgers, Wynonna Judd, and David Foster.

Ivan Bodley is as well an author. His book “Am I Famous Yet?”, describes the life of a working musician who has met, worked closely with, and gotten to know renowned rock stars. He has practically become a rock star himself but without all of the annoying trappings of actual notoriety or fortune.

Detlef Schlich is Podcaster, Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He is mainly working in the field of performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. In this podcast Schlich talks with South Florida roots rocker Monty Warren about Warren´s youth in West Palm Beach Florida, the anger and the the difficulties of growing up in a small town, with a broken family and a broken heart. They talk about the experience of a lawyer who is rocking and rollin in a slapback backslap world. What makes you shout, live and play the rock´n roll?

After learning his divorced mother was living in her car while he was at Emory University in Atlanta, Warren vowed to become a successful lawyer so she would never go hungry again.

In 2007, Fate brought Warren face to face with seasoned musicians Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin' Team (“Battleship Chains” and “I Love You Period”). After hearing the songs on Warren’s demo, they insisted on helping him make his first record, “Trailer Park Angel.” And the rest, as they say, is Roots Rock history.

Robb’s lyrical style of song poetry developed from a love of old-time country blues and his early years as a spoken word performance artist.

Alongside his distinctive take on the americana genre coupled with intelligent and thought provoking songwriting he regularly tours and performs internationally with his band but also solo when called for.

Matthew has up to now released three well-acclaimed albums and currently lives with his family in Cologne, Germany in a self-built home made from reclaimed material.

Albums can take time to ripen. For around thirty years the Cologne-based singer-songwriter has been making music. Now at the age of 48, he is releasing his first record. But the waiting was worthwhile. Bob Dylan himself could learn a thing or two from these 9 finely crafted songs. Influenced by the country blues, Matthew Robb’s musical arrangements grab your attention with their sheer simplicity. His voice, guitar and harp awaken the great traditional folk music of the American West. Without exception though, it’s the profound scope and depth of his lyrics that really make the compositions so contemporary and outstanding, Like a thread running through the album, the song poet speaks to the disillusionment of people living amongst the greed, procrastination and general malaise of a materialistic society, with themes as varied as modern-day slavery and the death of a close friend from alcoholism. However, despite this melancholic backdrop, Robb’s songs radiate a great hope that within mankind there lies a strength to lay that burden down.

Schlich talked and philosophized with him about Senger´s first encounter with the concept of music, his life in and around Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam, first instruments, bands, influence and more.
Dominik von Senger is a german musician best known as the guitar player of Dunkelziffer and the Phantom Band. He uses to be a bandmember of Jango Edwards & Friends Roadshow before he became active in Cologne’s Krautrock scene in the early ’80s. Von Senger was then a member of the quasi post-punk-new wave groups Dunkelziffer and Phantom Band, both of which also included Can’s Jaki Liebezeit, Damo Suzuki and Rosko Gee. Von Senger took the Can type of sound and remoulded it into a kind of slick fusion. Dunkelziffer was a German rock band that stylistically combined African rhythms and reggae with influences of the 80s sound like the New German Wave, which had just emerged at the time. Dunkelziffer has been described as a "German mystic group, playing percussive space reggae". The band was founded in 1981 by Cologne musicians from the Stollwerck scene. The group was designed in such a way that there should be no rigid structures, but each member could be a composer and everyone could contribute their creativity and spontaneity equally at any point in time.

He is a visual artist and one of the survivors of 5 so-called industrial schools.

In Robert´s artwork, you see many symbolic drawings that reflect on the injuries and sufferings by the religious state orders were children taken from their families and controlled by great fears to this very day. Robert still believes survivors are still held to the same feared orders.

After suffering serious abuse in the Music Room of Artane, Robert after 50 years has finally ventured into learning how to write songs, playing the guitar, making videos, and singing during the present Pandemic year.

Robert is a self-educated man who through good friends gained the confidence to go to college and university to achieve a full diploma and BA Honours. Robert to this day has continued learning how to support his fellow brothers and sisters of the institutions as an activist for truth. Art went through the veins of his life and gave him the ability to express his feelings with various mediums of art. Robert strongly believes that it was Art that carried him from his childhood to the present day. Many artists say they suffer for their art. This is one man who survived through his art.
