Autism Advocate Jimmy Clare interview - "Neurodivergence & The AUDHD Home"

Jimmy Clare Autistic Advocate interviews me about the “Neurodivergence & The AUDHD Home”

I realised the book now because:

  • After being diagnosed with ADHD and then Autism I wanted to write a book for the whole family as more than one person in the family household is Neurodivergent , and not just our kids
  • I have teamed up with Alina Gioda, who is an Expert Interior Designer, who I have known for over a year-and-a-half to produce the BEST home design book for everyone who are Neurodivergent.

  • So more about the book:

    • Getting our nervous system back into check is very important so each room of the home is dedicated to this.
    • “Cosy but not superficial” for the Teen Bedroom and “You design 70% and your parents 30%” for the kids bedroom.
    • Colour is really important and Alina has made some amazing combos for you to design your own home.
    • Emptiness is very important so we can be flexible to move things around, a sofa in three parts which can be adjusted when your mood suits you.

    • Jimmy would like:

      • A Safe space
      • Somewhere where no-one judges him
      • Alone space
      • A place that someone can listen to us
      • Venting out frustrations, so finding a solution to a problem he has.
      • Automation is very important to live a smoother life, because we focus on everything that isn’t working properly.
      • A place to decompress such as meditation, deep-breathing.
      • Personalise my own space ( even if we are living with our parents as an adult Neurodivergent).

      • Jimmy got a shoe organiser, ( a bag), which his mother doesn’t like and didn’t want in the corridor - so Jimmy said he wants it in HIS room

Alina and I find it important to create the corridor as a transitioning part of the home.

We are unsure about bringing fragrances into the home at present.

I ask Jimmy, if he would like a room to have a centre-piece (Anchoring ) - and Jimmy says his centre-piece is his BED - The bed IS THE focal poin

One part of the book is called “AUD - i - ments instead of Ornaments”, and we use these NOT to awaken out senses BUT to calm them instead.

Jimmy would like a blue or red wall in his room, expressing that the worst room to have looks like a hospital room with white walls, as many of us have to go for regular checks at the hospital.

Autistics and ADHD doesn’t like the smell of chemicals, because these can be triggering for us.

It’s also important to have an empty space when we come into our home so we can get our bearings.

The most fun part of the book is translating it into four languages, English, Spanish, German and Italian.

People will be calmer in their lives than before as this book has perfect ideas, for every budget, whether you live in a flat, or a mansion.

To make the book even more personal I will use quotes from my AUDHD ME&MO Podcast guests in the book, can can really leverage your life, and then you can listen to the episodes to hear more.

In summary, it used to be that people where diagnosed with ADHD and Autism on a singular basis, but now whole families are affected and when I wrote the “kitchen chapter” and the daily routine in the morning with ADHD kids around, packing their bags for school. How can DAD get himself prepared at home before he goes to work etc.

Lastly an AUDIO VERSION of the book will come out in mid January 2025.
