Dr. Bell discusses the differences between having sympathy and being empathetic. Empathy is the secret to being blessed. Sympathy is based on feeling sorry for others and drawing pity. Empathy causes one to share the feelings and emotions of those who are suffering. This is being able to relate to those who have walked in the shoes of those who are struggling.
In the effort to handle the anger and the negative emotions that go along with being hurt or rejected, one must have empathy for the one who causes the offense. Having empathy offers an understanding of why the individual behaved in the manner to cause the offense. It is important to understand what the individual is going through that led them to cause the offense, because it keeps us from being self-centered and reacting negatively toward the individual which may lose their soul. As believers we have to remember that it is not about us, but about leading the souls to Christ.
