Beyond Billables: Tackling Lawyer Burnout with Iman Ibrahim

Listen Later

In our previous conversation, Iman Ibrahim — former divorce lawyer and founder of the Over It Club — walked us through the role of divorce coaching and how it bridges the gap between legal clarity and emotional clarity.

In this episode, we turn the spotlight on another challenge close to home: burnout in the legal profession, especially among young lawyers.

Iman explains why burnout is about far more than long hours — it’s about chronic misalignment between values and reality. When lawyers are measured by billables and obedience, they stop showing up as whole people, and toxic firm cultures only make this worse.

We also dive into the myth that younger lawyers are “softer.” In Iman’s view, they are stronger than ever, refusing to normalise unhealthy patterns, asking whether the profession is sustainable, and demanding careers that align with the lives they want to lead. Coaching, she explains, can be a lifeline here — not to teach people how to quit, but to help them slow down, think clearly, and make intentional choices about whether to stay, leave, or redesign their path.

Finally, Iman delivers a message to firm leaders: you can’t yoga and pizza your way out of a broken culture. If law firms want real retention, innovation, and loyalty, they need to stop treating lawyers like machines and start rethinking the systems that guarantee burnout.
