A kid when it was normal to draw, color, paint, sculpt; a practice almost all of us did whether it was with our parents/siblings at home or with our teachers in grade school. As we age, most of us stop drawing, but not our guest today. No, Dr. Natter is a pioneer in Graphic Medicine, a field that explores the interaction between different mediums of art and the discourse of healthcare. Ladies and Gentlemen, I could not be more excited to share my conversation with Dr. Mike Natter, a current Internal Medicine Resident in New York City known for his Art Work, graphic illustrations, and narrative medicine. Mike grew up with an unusual path to medicine first learning to care for his Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes and studying Studio Art during his undergraduate career. Mike has a passion for taking his art to medical education, graphic novels, educating the public, and using it as a tool to teach, learn, and explain what it is like to be both a patient and physician balancing residency in a big city. In this episode we dive deep discussing his path to medicine, how he fought against the odds to get into medical school, what it is like being a patient and a physician, how he uses his art in his own education, how he finds the time to draw with his residency schedule, where he thinks the future of medicine is going, and what he thinks is the perfect type of medical practice for patients.
