You don't have to force gratitude or a positive attitude right now. It will come, I promise. But you wont have space for the gratitude when you are hiding the real emotions of hurt sad or mad. It is natural of course to want to be positive. None of us wants to feel fear, pain, or anything else that is uncomfortable. But pain and sadness are an unavoidable part of life. They are here to stay. The idea is not to try to change that reality but to expand our capacity to endure it. And make space for the gratitude.
Hearing the phrase just be grateful isn't always helpful. As a trauma survivor, there is good reason to avoid such expressions. During trauma, you instinctively go into a stress response. The fight, flight, or freeze mechanism is triggered, so you are going to do one of those three things.
Today I discuss ways to not only navigate this holiday of Thanksgiving, but how you too can hold space for where you are and make a shift to an empowered divorce by choosing gratitude.
