In 2019, California Senate Bill 1421 unsealed thousands of internal police department files, body camera footage and audiotapes for the first time. These are police departments' own, previously-confidential investigations into their officers' misconduct and serious use of force cases. For more than two years, reporters at NPR and member station KQED have been working to obtain these materials and report these stories. They've spoken to investigators, victims, and family members. The pilot of On Our Watch is this week's bonus episode of Up First.
