There have been several attempts to break into the monopoly that has traditionally been considered major league baseball, but no one has had much success for more than a season. But that's not to say the attempts were futile. In fact, 63 years aago this week, as the Continental League named Branch Rickey its first and only president, it started a chain of events that led to the first expansion of ther American or National League since the 19th century.
