Members Reviews:
Evocative, provocative, elegiac, elegant, a marvelous historical novel--
Magnificiently written panoramic exploration of the first decade after the Civil War ended. Mr. McCaig skillfully blends characters historical and fictional, documents and letters likewise, and creates innumerable memorable moments, places and people. One glimpses the hopes and failures of Reconstruction, the beginning of the continuing suppression of black Americans following emancipation, the start of the Gilded Age, and the tragedy of our Native Americans. The story of the Little Bighorn has been often told, but never more nuanced nor better than this; a Pyrrhic victory for the allied Plains Tribes given what ensued, but that might have been inevitable given the voraciousness and overwhelming numbers of white Americans. It may be that at least they got in one mighty blow at the white psyche with the massacre of the arrogant Custer and, sadly, any number of hapless troopers, including a number of immigrants, there because they could find no other work. A novel but also a series of lessons, which those who should learn them in our country today will not, ever.
Thought provoking and timely.
The histories of three cultures just after the Civil War. Honestly told and evoking the true characters of the men and women in this turbulent time. Each person is alive and vivid in his characterization. The motives of all three factions are understandable and sadly, inevitably destructive. The attitudes born from this time permeate society today and reverberate in our social conflict.
Really excellent, I think it was a partial mistake when ...
I've probably read 30 - 40 books on my Kindle since I got it, this is the first time I took the trouble to write a review. Really excellent, I think it was a partial mistake when I bought it, I think I thought it was history, not a historical novel, somewhat near the periphery of my usual tastes, but really first class, one of those books that you stay up till 3:00 am reading, even though you know you have to get up in the morning.
Excellent post-Civil War novel
Although difficult to keep the many characters straight, the stories combine into an effective narrative of struggles of the late nineteenth century ordinary Americans.

I enjoyed it. Learned a lot about the Lakota and understand Little Big Horn much better.
