In the mid 90s there was a fab movie version of the first book (Devil in a Blue Dress—with an exceptionally hot Denzel Washinton). But they're also just wonderful potboilers in the finest tradition. I recommend them to anyone wanting to read escapist fiction and diversify their bookshelves at the same time.
