Publisher's Summary:
Charles Barnhill, Deputy U.S. Marshal is the true saga of a lawman's life. He worked as a deputy US marshal in the Oklahoma-Indian Territory from 1879 until 1896 for the court of Judge Isaac Parker (the hanging judge) until the court was closed. He was a man as big as his legend, known among outlaws as the Bible-believing marshal. Charley never took the life of an outlaw, although he was involved in many gun fights and was wounded eight times in the performance of his duty. Who were the desperadoes who made Fort Smith the hangman's capital? Colorful but deadly men and women such as Belle Starr, the Bandit Queen, who wore two six-guns over her skirt, the Wesley Barnett gang that killed four law officers before they were eradicated, a young ax murderer, a wife killer, and a young Indian boy who became one of the last men hung at Fort Smith. Discover them all in this dramatic book. Tales long forgotten come to life again.

... it is to read a book that is so good you are sad when you finish
You probably know how it is to read a book that is so good you are sad when you finish. This is one of those books. Author, Mrs. Linda Carol Anderson exhibits an amazing skill at painting mental pictures of the people and events that take place in the book. Itâs as though you are standing beside the characters in the book as events take place. Whatâs more is that these events are described in detail and they really happened. This book is especially significant to me because I have wondered all my life about the characters in this book because my grandfather Alva Barnhill, told me about Uncle Charley on many occasions when I was a child. You see James Alford (Jimmy) Barnhill, Charlesâ brother is my Great-grandfather. That makes Charley Barnhill my great uncle. Thank you Mrs. Linda Carol Anderson for bringing my ancestors to life. This book is the best birthday present that I ever had.

Charles Barnhill Deputy U. S. Marshal
My wife and I are both retired United States Marshals and recently finished reading Charles Barnhill Deputy U. S. Marshal. Mrs. Linda Anderson's account of Deputy Barnhill transported us back to rough and calous times of Indian Territory of the 1870's. Mrs. Anderson did an outstanding job of researcing the role of a deputy U. S. marshal right down to the office work, the U. S. District Court at Fort Smith which had jurisdiction of the District of Western Arkansas and Indian Territory.
Mrs. Andersons' depiction of life on the scout was amazingly accurate down to the methodology, the hiring of guards, cooks and possemen. Her portrayal of deputy marshals read like a movie in our minds eye. We could almost smell the smoke from the campfire and taste the cooking bacon in the skillet. It was that good. Likewise, Mrs. Anderson's account of Charles Barnhill as a lawman of compassion was and deep seated religion depicted the true character of the man and the family.
For any student of American history, frontier or territorial law, the U. S. Marshals Service or anyone wanting a great read, this is your book. I'd lend you ours, but we are re-reading it already. Do yourself a favor and get the book.
