On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde have a chance to talk about a Trojan football victory after USC took care of business by beating Rutgers 42-20 Friday night in the Coliseum. Coach feels like the Men of Troy needed this win badly after losing three straight and sporting a losing record for the first time in Lincoln Riley's head coaching career. The Scarlet Knights were an overmatched opponents and both teams were dealing with significant injuries, but USC did what it needed to do and put up good numbers that the program can build upon heading into the final four games of the regular season.
It was a unique Friday sports night in Los Angeles with just a few miles of freeway separating USC hosting Rutgers, the Lakers hosting the Phoenix Suns and the Dodgers hosting the New York Yankees. Coach talks about all that was going on in the City of Angels and the part the Trojans played in the historic night.
Coming out of that game, players were smiling again and that is very important for the psyche of a young student athlete. They could go to class on Monday with their heads up and there is more joy in the locker room and at the football facilities knowing that the team got an important victory.
Following the win, the fans seem a little more subdued and less enthusiastic, likely a combination of the caliber of opponent, the late Friday kickoff and the lost expectations of what could have been a promising season after USC beat LSU in the opener.
