Cody Helps Out Excerpt:

It was a bright sunny day on Ahway Island. Cody Coyote came out of his family’s den in the Ahway Island Focus and wandered over to his favorite nearby rock. He jumped up onto the rock and settled himself on its cool surface, ready to enjoy the morning. He swung his tail as he sat, enjoying the fresh morning breeze. He looked up at the trees and watched the delightful bluebirds and cardinals playing in the upper branches. From time to time, he whined back at them in greeting as he listened to them singing in the trees.

Cody had just woken up, but he was excited to start his day. Today, Cody was going to have a picnic with one of his siblings, his sister Claire. Claire had suggested it; she was always the sibling most likely to take charge and make plans. They were going to head toward the edge of the forest, close to where the humans lived, and eat some of the delicious blackberries they knew were growing near a public park.

Cody was looking forward to the picnic. Blackberries were some of his favorite things. He was excited to eat a whole bunch of them. His sister Claire liked to sleep in, though, and so she hadn’t woken up yet. But Cody didn’t mind waiting for her. It was a beautiful, peaceful morning and he didn’t mind having a little time to himself. He always enjoyed just watching other creatures – humans, birds, bugs – it didn’t matter who they were; Cody liked seeing how they interacted with each other. So, Cody just sat quietly on the rock, thinking about the upcoming picnic.
