Irregular verbs are a fact of life in English and many other languages. In this and the next few podcasts you’ll practice sentences with some of the most common irregular verbs in the present, simple past, and present perfect tenses.

1 say said said

—She says she speaks Spanish and French. [present]

—She said she was going to the mall after work. [past]

—I’ve never said I wanted to teach mathematics! [present perfect]

2 make made made

—I don’t make enough money to buy a house.

—Last year I made more money than this year.

—Have you ever made a promise and then failed to keep it?

3 go went gone

—I go to work every morning.

—I went to sleep early last night.

—Mary has gone away and she probably won’t come back.

4 take took taken

—Please take your time. There’s no rush.

—He took me to a wonderful new restaurant.

—Have your Italian friends ever taken you to an opera?

5 come came come

—My mom comes over to my house every Saturday.

—John came to see me in the hospital.

—I have come to ask you for advice.

6 see saw seen

—I see you’re studying English. Good!

—I saw my parents last weekend. They’re doing very well.

—My wife has never seen me lose my temper.

7 know knew known

—He knows my name but not where I live.

—Mary knew the correct answer but she was too shy to raise her hand.

—Have you known what it is like to be really poor?

8 get got got/gotten (US)

—If he gets through his chemistry class, he’ll graduate in May. [gets through = completes]

—She got invited to spend three weeks in France with her friend.

—I still have not gotten used to hearing German all day long.

9 give gave given

—If I give the dog hamburger, will he love me?

—She gave me a very funny birthday present.

—I have given up on learning Hungarian. It’s too difficult. [give up on = quit]

10 find found found

—If I find your missing keys, will you cook dinner tonight?

—Ha! I found your missing keys! They were on the seat of the car.

—Once again, I have found your missing keys. You are so forgetful!
