This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for May 7th, 2021.

In India, a new single-day record in new coronavirus cases combined with the number of vaccinations actually going down. 3,980 deaths as vaccine shortages continue and states compete with each other to get available doses. Only about 3% of the population is fully vaccinated and only 9.2% have gotten at least one dose.

Bad as the numbers have been, a new study says they were probably much, much worse. As in twice as many deaths from COVID-19 around the world than has been reported. The University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates the U.S. alone undercounted deaths by over 300,000, while the death tolls in India and Mexico are nearly three times the official numbers. In Russia, the estimate is five times the official number. And in Egypt, there’ve been nearly 13 COVID deaths for every one that was counted.

Speaking of Russia, authorities there have approved a single-dose version of the Sputnik V vaccine. It’s called Sputnik Light, and it has yet to complete its own advanced testing to ensure safety and effectiveness. Russia started human trials of Sputnik Light in January, and the studies are still ongoing. It’s intended to be exported, not used in Russia.

Pfizer wants the Olympic games in Tokyo to go on, so they’re donating doses of vaccine to vaccinate athletes and their delegations. Initial doses should go out at the end of May with the goal being to make sure second doses are given ahead of arrivals in Japan.

If you don’t want a COVID test, you can go hang out with some bees. Dutch researchers have trained bees, which have an incredible sense of smell, to identify which samples are infected with COVID-19. They did this by giving sugar water to them as a reward when they were shown infected samples. So now, when they see an infection, they literally stick out their tongues, yes bees have tongues, indicating a positive result.
