Dawn & Tracy | Should Employers, Clients or the BBC Stifle Freedom of Speech? Gary Lineker Suspended From Match of the Day MOTD For Social Media Comments

Listen Later

If you’re in the UK then there’s no way you’ve not seen the headlines about BBC’s Match of the Day football presenter, Gary Lineker being suspended from the show over a tweet criticising the government over the current migrant crisis. This whole situation has pissed off both Dawn and Tracy because it’s thrown into question people’s freedom of speech.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Essentially in Gary’s tweet he likened the government’s treatment and language used towards migrants, to that of the German government in the 1930s. Because of this he was suspended from the BBC’s MOTD as the BBC is supposed to be an impartial broadcaster.
  • In solidarity with Gary, his fellow MOTD presenters Alan Shearer and Ian Wright announced they would not appear on the show until the situation was resolved. This led to the BBC showing the football highlights with no commentary or punditry.
  • The only way we can actually have a conversation about issues is by talking about them, and that is exactly what Gary did on his private Twitter account. The big issue is that his freedom of speech was shut down by an employer because he criticised the government.
  • The ability to voice your disagreement with the government is a key part of our democracy. It doesn’t matter if you agree with what he said or not, you should agree with his right to say it. Does a company have the right to dictate what he can and can’t say?

BEST MOMENTS

‘Why does the BBC have the ability to silence someone’s freedom of speech’

‘The only way we can iron out any ignorance is with the ability to have a conversation’

‘You respect the laws of that country and if you can’t follow them just don’t go there’
