Double J Farms Simmental Cattle with Kipp Julson

Listen Later

Hey everyone! Welcome to another Producer Profile brought to you by the American Cattlemen Podcast.  Just ahead you will hear from Dustin Hector, Direct or Business Development for the American Cattlemen Media Group as he sits down with Kipp Julson, Co-Owner of Double J Farms Simmental Cattle out of Garretson, South Dakota. The farm, established in 1974, is a family-operated registered cattle operation run by the father-son team of Bob and Kipp Julson. The podcast began with a discussion of current agricultural conditions in South Dakota, with Kipp noting that the winter had been relatively mild up to that point. Cattle were still grazing on corn stalks, and the farm had experienced variable moisture conditions throughout the year - wet in June, dry during summer months, with some late fall precipitation. Kipp provided background on the farm's origins, tracing its roots to his grandparents Wesley and Verl Julson, who were originally dairy farmers. When his father returned from college, he transitioned the operation to a registered cattle enterprise. The current operation focuses on black, red, and polled cattle with DNA verification and genomic-enhanced EPDs. Double J Farms emphasizes extensive artificial insemination and embryo transfer programs, utilizing top-tier seminal genetics. Located just 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, the operation sits along the Split Rock Creek and represents a multi-generational commitment to cattle breeding and agricultural excellence. The interview was part of a broader podcast series that aims to highlight individual producers and their contributions to the cattle industry. Interspersed throughout the recording were sponsorship messages from agricultural equipment and supply companies, reflecting the podcast's focus on serving the farming and ranching community. The conversation highlighted the Jolson family's long-standing dedication to cattle breeding, their adaptability to changing agricultural conditions, and their commitment to maintaining a high-quality registered cattle operation in the challenging environment of South Dakota.
