Description:

Welcome to Surviving Medicine, the podcast that takes you into the mind of the best and brightest premedical and medical students, residents and physicians discussing where Medical Education is today and the future of healthcare tomorrow.

We want to take a moment to thank you, our listeners, for listening in and providing feedback. Your opinions and feedback are invaluable to us as we are constantly trying to improve and make this a better resource for you all. For all of our new listeners, we just launched our brand-new website featuring not only our podcast, but different articles, poems, and pieces on how to survive medicine. Our newest addition is the medical hero section where we have practicing physicians answer 10 important questions providing our readers with the tips and resources they need to get through medicine, practice self-care, and stay sane during the residency process. Yesterday, we had Dr. Jack Obrien as our first Medical Hero, you may remember Jack in one of our earlier episodes, all the way back at episode 3. Jack gives some great recommendations in his answers so make sure to check it out.

For Today’s episode we are excited to bring you an interview with Dr. Tommy and Phoebe Martin. Tommy and Phoebe recently graduated from St. George’s University and are actually in Kenya, as we release this episode, giving back and serving the community there. Tommy and Phoebe are two of my favorite larger than life physicians, they met during their first year in medical school, figured out how to get married while in medical school, survived a long-distance relationship in medical school, and are some of the fiercest athletes I know! For this interview, both tommy and phoebe were nicest enough to let me into their home, just a day after they both ran a marathon, to do this interview. They truly are glowing examples of selfless service. In this episode we discuss their path to medicine, why they feel called to serve on global health missions, how they incorporate religion into their practice and their schedule, how they find time to work out every single day together, how to manage a long-distance relationship in medical school, how you can fail the MCAT and still become a doctor, and where they think the future of medicine is going.
