An EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) or CME (Coronal Mass Ejections) have the potential to be one of the most disaster scenarios we can think of, yet it’s a disaster scenario that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. This may be because there isn’t an easy answer to preparing for an EMP or CME, or because it’s just too scary to think about.

This week I talked to Matthew Stein about what EMP’s and CME’s are, how possible these scenarios are, and what the long term consequences would be. Matthew is an engineer and best selling author of two books very popular in preparedness circles “When Technology Fails” and “When Disaster Strikes”. He also runs the website WhenTechFails.com

When Disaster Strikes

Disasters often strike without warning and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Yet armed with the right tools and information, survivors can fend for themselves and get through even the toughest circumstances.

Matthew Stein’s When Disaster Strikes provides a thorough, practical guide for how to prepare for and react in many of life’s most unpredictable scenarios.

When Technology Fails

There’s never been a better time to “be prepared.” Matthew Stein’s comprehensive primer on sustainable living skills—from food and water to shelter and energy to first-aid and crisis-management skills—prepares you to embark on the path toward sustainability.

But unlike any other book, Stein not only shows you how to live “green” in seemingly stable times, but to live in the face of potential disasters, lasting days or years, coming in the form of social upheaval, economic meltdown, or environmental catastrophe.

Matthew is also our featured guest this month at The Preparedness Experience, and will be doing a live video with us on March 25th to talk more about Electromagnetic Pulses and long term preparing.

Mat and I had such a great conversation I had to split the show up into two parts. This week we talk about what an EMP is, who could launch an EMP strike, and some of the secondary consequences of an EMP strike.

I listed the topics we covered in this weeks show, along with all the links we mentioned as well. Next week we continue our conversation about Nuclear reactors melting down, and also how cars might be affected, how a CME is different from an EMP, and how we can prepare for them.

Show Topics…

What is an EMP and What Damage Would It Do: We started the conversation off by talking about what an EMP is, and the damage it could cause. Actually, most of this podcast is about the long term damage an EMP or CME could cause.

How Does an EMP work: The basics of the electromagnetic pulse process isn’t all that complicated, but it can seem that way at first. We talked about the E1, E2 and E3 effects of an EMP and the damage those would do. This article I wrote also goes into detail about EMP’s.

How Worried Should We be About the Threat of an EMP: Some people think an EMP is something made up by Hollywood, and isn’t a viable threat,
