Last week’s Survivalist Prepper Podcast was part 1 with Matthew Stein talking about EMP’s, CME’s, and Nuclear Meltdowns. This week we finish up our 2 part series right where we left off. We ended last week’s show talking about the severe effects a nuclear meltdown would have on Americans.

As I mentioned in last weeks podcast (view the show notes here) Matthew is the author of a couple very popular books about preparedness. The first is “When Disaster Strikes“, and his most popular is “When Technology Fails” which is a very detailed preparedness manual.

After we finished our discussion about what a nuclear meltdown would do, we started talking about Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s), large scale disaster, and the effects they would have globally and locally.

Below are some of the topics we covered in this weeks show, and make sure and check out Matthews books (listed above), and his website WhenTechFails.com.

This Week’s Topics…

How Solar Storms would affect our infrastructure: As we mentioned in last weeks show, and this article, a CME only produces the E3 aspect that would affect transformers and the power grid, much like the Carrington Event in 1859.

How possible is a Solar storm: The sun is very active, and these happen all the time, but if it’s directed at us, it could do massive damage. There was a near miss in 2012 and some analysts believe that a direct hit by an extreme CME such as the one that missed Earth in July 2012 could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling (and possibly destroying) everything that plugs into a wall socket.

Long term disaster scenarios: Of the large global disaster scenarios, a CME is the most likely. All out nuclear war is possible, but it is mutually assured destruction, meaning most countries are hesitant to “push the button”. Super volcano’s and asteroids could be extinction level events, but it could be thousands of years before something like this happens.

Hardening the power grid: For a number of reasons there has been a lack of interest in The lack hardening the power grid against a CME or EMP, the main one being money. Some people believe that the affects of an EMP or CME are exaggerated, and that’s where these power companies and our government are placing their bet.

The aftermath of large scale disasters: Disasters like this are why we prepare on such a large scale and try to learn as much as possible about every aspect of survival. A large scale disaster that would set up back 200 years would mean living life would be completely different, and adjusting to the new normal.

How would an EMP effect cars: There is quite a bit of conversations in preparedness circles about what affects an EMP would have on cars, and there really isn’t a definitive answer. Even if just a small number of cars were affected, it could still cause massive chaos, and widespread problems.

Matthews books: We talked about how When Technology Fails and When Disaster Strikes are different. When Technology Fails is much more detailed, and more of a preparedness manual. When Disaster Strikes is a good book too, but has a more narrow focus.
