Parents & Teens Rising

Ep. 9: How to Stop Yelling at Your Teen (and Actually Stay Calm)

Listen Later

In this episode, I’m talking about something that doesn’t get said enough: we can’t just send our teens to coaching or therapy and expect everything to change if we aren’t willing to do the work, too.

Real, lasting change doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in the family system. When we, as parents, start learning how to regulate our own emotions, shift old patterns, and show up differently, we create the safety and stability our teens need to grow and heal. It’s just as important for us to do our own inner work as it is for them to get support, because that’s how true transformation happens—together.

I’ll also share my own story of moving from reactive and overwhelmed to grounded and calm, and what that shift did for me, my relationships, and the overall energy in my home.

If you’ve ever caught yourself yelling, slamming a door, or saying something you later regretted, this episode is for you.

Here’s What I Talk About
  • How our kids learn emotional regulation by watching us
  • Why modeling calm is more effective than lecturing about it
  • What co-regulation really means and how it works
  • How mirror neurons make emotions contagious (for better or worse)
  • The 5 powerful shifts that can change your family dynamic:
    1. My own story: how I went from dysregulated to calm and what that changed
    2. Taking the pause: learning to step back before reacting
    3. Letting go of “power-over” parenting: moving away from “my way or the highway”
    4. The power of co-regulation: how our calm influences our teen’s nervous system
    5. Whole-family growth: why change can’t happen in a vacuum
