Here on RÚV English we strive to bring not just Iceland but RÚV to the world in English.
Svetlana Tshikanoskaya is the leader of the Belarus opposition, now living in exile in Vilnius, Lithuania, from where she directs her political opposition to Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus. Svetlana's husband, Sergei, is currently a political prisoner in Belarus, along with at least nearly 1500 others. Svetlana and their children have not seen him for three years.
Svetlana was at the NATO summit, attending and organizing side-events. At one of those, she gave a special award to Thordis Kolbrun Gylfadottir, Iceland's minister of foreign affairs, for her steadfast support of the democratic opposition in Belarus.
RÚV's Brussels correspondent Björn Malmquist met with Svetlana.
