  • Problems with “The List of Wants” and how sometimes monumental lists of wants can make your partner feel overwhelmed or as though they are falling short as a provider.
  • The impact of negative comments is 3x that of positive comments. Be sure to express gratitude for what you have and take baby steps when bringing up your want list.
  • Coming to the understanding that expressing wants does not equate to feeling as though you are unhappy with what you have. Finding the middle ground to communicate this is tricky, but important.
  • The Housewives Effect- does your husband feel like you are developing unrealistic expectations when watching shows about extravagant living? Is it entertainment or aspirational?
  • Does your partner have literal thinking? Do you understand the difference when your partner expresses a want as an example or as a specific request?
  • The importance of having goals, and being clear about your realistic expectations about achieving them. Discuss your work goals, your personal goals, your couple goals, and your family goals.
  • Learning your partner’s “language” is key to better communication. How do they process information? How do they respond to different ways of presenting information? Do they do better with a plan and timeline? Do they do better with vision boards? What kind of communicator is your spouse?
  • Learning about and growing with your spouse is a journey that never ends. Be sincere and be proactive and you will find the rewards worth it!
