This week: Mom Guilt

  • Mothers carry an astounding amount of guilt around with them. I can’t keep up! I need to spend more time with my kids! I need to relax more! I need to clean the house! The list is endless.
  • Guilt can come from others thinking you have more, do more, are more than they do. We all have our own things going on. No one is perfect.
  • A common feeling of guilt is not being able to do everything you want and need to do on a daily basis. Learning to reframe your thinking can help. You likely ARE keeping up with what you have to do.
  • What can we do to cut back on the Mom Guilt?
  • Social Media- learn to use it correctly! It is a big contributor to our guilt or feelings of inadequacy. Learn to scroll by things that trigger these feelings. Social media is often a false look into people’s real lives. Use it for IDEAS and not comparison.
  • Stay true to your values! What is truly important to you? Learn to let go of what is not important or in alignment with your values.
  • Lean in on people who can help lift you up and support you and help you to relieve the guilt, rather than add to it.
  • Your reality is not equal to someone else’s reality. They may have an immaculate house, you may not. And that is OK. You are definitely NOT alone in that.
  • Identify the habits and triggers and work on changing them.
  • What is it about your parenting style that adds to the guilt? What can you change to improve that?
  • Be realistic in what you can achieve. Insurmountable goals need to be reevaluated.
  • Check in with your family! What do they see and feel? You may find you are doing better than you thought!
  • Most importantly, work on gratitude for what you have and what you are able to do.
