“We’re so excited about this new technology,” says Arnab Chakravarti, MD, medical director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the OSUCCC – James. “With FLASH, we will be able to deliver the entire course of radiation in less than a second, in one day, rather than in smaller doses spread out over six to eight weeks, and without the side effects of traditional radiation. This will be revolutionary.” The James will be one of the first cancer centers to study FLASH proton radiation. “The proton beams stop right at the tumor, it doesn’t pass through the body as they do in photon X-ray radiation treatment,” Chakravarti says. “So, very few normal cells get irradiated. This is the very epitome of targeted cancer treatment.”
