Publisher's Summary:
Ataxerxes, king of Persia, needed a wife. This powerful warrior lord picked the one girl who would have given anything to have been passed over - a Jewish scholar, Esther, from the back streets of his capital, Shushan.
To a king bored by the chattering of women wreathed in musky scents, this changeling was a breath of fresh air. But the new queen of Persia was lost in a world of protocol and soon lost her husband's favour. Esther's only hope to avert a holocaust was to risk her own life and go, uninvited, before a king who had already disposed of one unpopular wife.

Up to my 'Lofty' expectations
I love Norah Lofts books. They never leave accounts to the figment of one's imagination but there appears much research and credibility. I turned each page with interest and enjoyment knowing there is more excitement awaiting around the corner. Esther is a compelling biblical story and the ending was in accord with beliefs and left me feeling happy and inspired. Celine from Australia
fair
Rather slow-moving story, with bland characters. I enjoy other of Norah Lofts' books but not this one. Try Lovers All Untrue or The King's Concubine for, in my opinion, a better read by this author .
Excellent Story
I love everything I've ever read by Ms. Lofts. Well-researched and well developed characters and always a feminine take on history.
great Bible story/novel
Wonderfully written as only Nora Lofts can write. My second favorite to "How Far To Bethlehem" which I have read EVERY year at Christmas time for the last 20 years.
Very interesting book
Norah Lofts is the best storyteller I have ever read. This book, while not as good as How Far to Bethlem, is a great interpretation of a little known Bible story. Holds the interest of the read on every page.
