AZ Brain Food (0:06:31)
The national free school lunch program benefits over 20 million children in the US every single day. These are kids from underprivileged homes that would go hungry without it. But have you ever wondered how many of these kids go hungry on the weekends? Ruth Farnsworth Collins had this same question, and it propelled her to start AZ Brain Food. AZ Brain Food is a nonprofit organization that currently feeds over three thousand and six hundred kids on the weekends throughout Arizona today. Here to talk with us today is Karen Zaharis, the director of operations.
Mental Health Playlist (0:18:52)
I think music is one of the best things out there. Nothing else can help me feel better than putting on my favorite song. It can make you feel like the main character in a rom-com or boost your mood when you’re sad. Call me crazy, but this year I felt like I’ve needed a lot more mood-boosting music than usual. And I’m not alone. According to Spotify, mental health playlists increased by 122% this year. So what are mental health playlists and how can I curate my own? Here to tell us all about it is mental health counselor and educator Shainna Ali.
Self-Esteem and Consumer Behavior (0:35:55)
They say we are what eat, but what about what we buy? Do our consumer habits define us as well? Or maybe it’s the other way around—maybe it’s how we define ourselves that influences our shopping habits. Perhaps our decision to buy the store-brand ketchup instead of Heinz is influenced by some sub-conscious reasoning related to our self-perceptions. Well, lucky for us, there is someone who can answer these questions! Here to discuss with us who buys inferior products and why is behavioral scientist and professor of marketing at Schulich School of Business, York University, Dr. Nicole Mead.
Sensory Deprivation Tanks (1:12:15)
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to lose all five of your senses simultaneously? We’ve seen this kind of experience manufactured in sci-fi films and TV Shows such as Stranger Things. The characters are placed in sensory deprivation tanks. But these tanks also exist outside fiction, and are often referred to as flotation tanks. In fact, they’ve grown in popularity, and you might be able to fine one at your local spa. But what is the purpose of losing your sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste? What are the benefits of these tanks? Today we invited Kristopher Gunther, a sensory deprivation tank expert, on the show to talk about flotation tanks and what benefits they can have.
Winter Hair Trends (1:23:35)
When it comes to hair styles in the winter, I feel like there is a spectrum that we all lie on. One end of this spectrum is dying our hair and getting a fresh new cut to keeps things interesting and exciting. The other end of the spectrum is putting a beanie on every day and calling it good. Today, we’ve invited Michelle Lindsay, friend of the show, hair stylist, color expert, and an instructor for L’oreal Professionnel, to share this winter season’s hair trends, and help us to look our best, wherever we are on the hair-style spectrum.
