Work/Play Balance for Kids (0:08:18)

Finding the balance between work and play seems to be one of the everlasting struggles as an adult. But have you ever thought of it as a problem for children too? We send them to school to learn from teachers and books, but the skills they develop during playtime can be just as important to their development in other ways. So how do you find that sweet spot between work and play? Joining us on the show today is Jeanne-Marie Paynel, a parenting mentor and home consultant, here with us to discuss helping your child balance their work time and play time.

Servicing Refugee and Immigrant Students (0:23:37)

The early years of our schooling experiences are hard. We try to add our letters and read our numbers and it seems impossible that we’ll ever get them straight. But eventually things fall into place and we get the hang of school. However, this experience is not shared by all school kids. There are many students who have experienced interrupted schooling and for whom English is likely not their mother tongue. These students typically come from immigrant and refugee populations and have very different educational needs than those who don’t face these barriers. Here to discuss what the educational needs are of these immigrant and refugee students and how to meet these needs is Dr. Lisa Auslander, Principal Investigator and Project Director for New York City’s Bridges to Academic Success.

Shiners (0:36:20)

What image comes to mind when you think of shoe shining? Maybe a busy train station or a stand at an international airport. Probably tall, high-backed chairs occupied by people reading a newspaper. But what about the people in front of the stand, the shoe shiners themselves? What’s their story and what led them to shoe shining? Maybe they see it as an art form, or maybe it’s just a job that pays the bills. Well, Stacey Tenenbaum asked these same questions, so she set out to find answers. Here to discuss the stories of those in this underappreciated industry is the director of the documentary series "Shiners", Stacey Tenenbaum herself.

Your Mental Health Alarm (1:01:20)

Over the last few years there has been a lot of focus on spreading awareness of the importance of mental health. Awareness is a fantastic first step, but how do we take care of our mental health? How do we even recognize that we NEED to focus on our mental health? It doesn’t always come naturally to take a step back and really think about your headspace. Are we having healthy thought patterns? Are we handling our stressors well? There’s so much to keep track of! Luckily for us, there are oftentimes “mental health alarms” that can alert us to the fact that we may need to pay some attention to our mental health. Joining us today to teach us about tuning in to our mental health alarms is Stacy Penright. Between her busy job as a business initiatives consultant with Wells Fargo and her work with her nonprofit “Respect My Voice,” Stacy has had plenty of practice learning to pay attention to her mental health alarms.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy (1:19:30)

Germany’s parliament has recently proposed a law that orders all dog owners to walk their dogs for at least two hours a day. While keeping our most loyal companions physically active is extremely important, is the law reasonable? Life can be busy and two hours can be a huge chunk of our day, and some dogs may not even need two whole hours. So how do we know what’s best for our own dog? Joining us today is veterinarian and host of the podcast Vet School Unleashed, Dr. Seth Williams who is here to answer all our questions on how we can keep our dogs physically healthy.

ALS Legislation (1:30:51)

On The Lisa Show, we are privileged to discuss and learn about a variety of topics. Some are random and silly, and others are deeply meaningful. Today, we are covering one of those personal and important topics. We are discussing ALS. This morning, we feel very honored to speak with Rachel and Ryan May, a couple personally affected by ALS, as they share specific ways in which each one of us can help fight the disease through supporting new legislation.
